Jose Maria Aznar calls Sanchez Sahara decision a historic mistake

José María Aznar calls Sánchez’ Sahara decision a “historic mistake”: “Spain will pay dearly”

The historic turn that the Spanish government made last week in terms of foreign policy on the issue Western Sahara, which gives in to Morocco’s demands and considers this territory as an autonomous region of Rabat, continues to bring momentum. The decision, taken in secret and unilaterally by Pedro Sánchez, created a powder keg in our country’s political sector. The last to join in the criticism was the President Jose Maria Aznar.

Following the attacks and criticism from all political parties, left and right, the former leader of the PP crossed out in an interview with RNE this morning that Sánchez’s decision on the Sahara was a “historic mistake,” he has asserted “Spain will pay dearly for this.”

Aznar has indicated with his position that Spain sends a message of extremely dangerous weakness” Morocco. The expresident also recalled that Sánchez had changed a historic position towards a friendly country, but that “it concerns Spain’s historic responsibility towards the former Spanish colony”.

“Putin told me he doesn’t think Ukraine is a real country”

The former “popular president also devoted an important part to talking about the war in Ukraine and the figure of Vladimir Putin, whom Aznar has dealt with on numerous occasions in the past.

“All people who have been in power for many years, and especially when it comes to dictators like Putin, tend to close themselves off. I spoke to him about these issues,” Aznar explained. “He told me that he doesn’t see Ukraine as a real country, but as part of Russia.”

Finally, the former president recalled how his then Russian counterpart told him that “Russia needed Ukraine to guarantee its security and that would never accept hypothetical NATO threats”. Something the West “didn’t take into account”.
