A Cuban saves the life of a woman and her young daughter while crossing the Rio Grande

A girl and her mother, both Cubans, were rescued by Jorge Carlos Santana Dumont, another migrant from the island, when he prevented them from being swept away by the waters of the Rio Grande.

In a video that the man himself recorded already on US territory shortly after the dangerous incident, Dumont refers to what happened: “We just crossed it, nobody died. All alive. Look how swollen this river is. All alive. Thank God”.

Immediately afterwards, he goes to the crying girl and her mother, who confirms her words with a repeat: “He saved our lives, he saved our lives.”

As the phone moves, the camera captures dozens of people on the US banks of the Rio Grande, all wet and recovering from the ordeal.

The hero

Subsequently, Jorge Carlos Santana published another video on the social network Facebook. In it he thanks everyone who congratulated him for risking his own life to save two people he didn’t know. In this material, the Cuban gave details of what happened and why he did it.

“I felt like I was doing something good in life, something great, because in my simple right hand was the life of this woman and this girl.”

He added that “before crossing the river, this woman asked for help, which she could not”.

“It was really something dark, something terrible, I had a backpack with two coats, food and weight in my left hand. I put the backpack in a black bag and water fell on it. In other words, it had tremendous weight on the left as well, plus those who went with the flow,” he said.

Santana Dumont assured that he is not striving to be famous or to be rewarded with money, but that people will take notice. He specified that during the trip to the MexicanAmerican border, several people advised him to continue on his way and only think of him when he saw someone in trouble.

“They said to me, ‘Hey, if you see someone falling at the intersection or breaking their foot or passing out, leave them and move on, don’t look back, it’s your life.’

However, such an attitude has nothing to do with him.

“It’s not that I consider myself a hero or anything, but I’m like that, natural and I like to help others without seeing the price, even if it costs my life. Have a clear conscience before God, before the world. I think that’s worth a lot.”
