A home care worker in Ohio was arrested and charged with attempted murder and theft after allegedly stealing $50,000 from a 93-year-old man she was caring for and then, when police began investigating, tried to poison him.

Mallory Giles, 34, has been asked by Sandusky Police to give an account of her conduct.

“I don’t know why I did that,” she said Thursday in an interview recorded with a body camera and released by Sandusky police.

Giles was arrested Thursday and was being held at the Erie County Jail on $560,000 bail Monday.

Police were alerted in April by the elderly man’s family who noticed strange transactions on his credit card.

He had given the card to Giles as his caretaker so she could buy his essentials.

But police on body camera footage tell Giles, “They basically stocked your whole house with all these credit cards.”

Lt. Scott Dahlgren told Fox 8, “We believe it included shoes, clothing, furniture for her home, wall decor, outdoor lawn care items.”

During the police investigation, the victim was suddenly hospitalized with a suspected drug overdose and was given Narcan to reverse the effects of opioids.

Asked Thursday during her interview while under arrest, Giles is asked if he has a drug problem.

“No,” she says.

Dahlgren said they believe Giles put opioids in the victim’s food to keep him quiet and unaware of what she was doing.

“She tried to keep him medicated to a point where he wouldn’t look at bank statements and credit card statements and things like that, where she could just do things like that without him noticing,” he said.

‘It is sad. It’s very annoying for someone to take advantage of someone who’s so vulnerable, you know.

“Unfortunately, our older people in society are vulnerable and people continue to prey on them.

“We’re just glad a family member then noticed, rather than actually moving forward.”
