Detroit-Automakers Stellantis and LG Energy Solutions have announced that they will invest approximately $ 4.1 billion through a joint venture to establish Canada’s first large-scale domestic electric vehicle battery manufacturing facility.

Construction of a plant in Windsor, Ontario will begin later this year and will begin operations in the first quarter of 2024, according to a cross-Atlantic automaker. When the plant is fully operational, Stellantis expects annual production capacity to exceed 45GWh and create an estimated 2,500 new jobs.

The new plant is part of a plan to accelerate EV investment and sell 5 million EVs worldwide by 2030. This includes all sales in Europe and 50% of passenger car and light truck sales in North America.

The announcement is up-to-date for automakers about the battery factory, also known as the Gigafactory, and companies are shifting their focus to all-electric vehicles over the last decade. Almost all major automakers around the world have announced such plans, including allocating billions of dollars to the production of batteries, the most important component of such vehicles.

Stellantis, the world’s fourth-largest car manufacturer, was founded in January 2021 by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and the French-based Group PSA. There are 14 individual car brands including Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep and Peugeot.
