The former R’n’B star was found guilty of luring women and children last September
R. Kelly, American singer, former R’n’B star best known for 1996’s I believe I can fly, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for luring women and children for sexual purposes. Fox News reports. The verdict came in a Brooklyn court almost a year after the 55-year-old singer was found guilty of running a criminal organization in Chicago that recruited women, young African Americans, including minors, for over twenty years subjecting them to sexual and psychological abuse.
On Sept. 27, federal court returned the verdict – for which the singer faced a life sentence – for a series of sex trafficking crimes dating back to the 1990s. For the prosecution, Kelly had set up a ruthless system, a kind of harem, through which she, thanks in part to her celebrity, abused minors, girls and, in at least two cases, boys. The victims were subject to his will. Kelly has always denied all allegations, but did not testify during the process.
The case had come to light in 2017 thanks to the work of a Chicago journalist, Jim DeRogatis, who had collected the complaint from the parents of a girl who had ended up in Kelly’s network. From this an investigation with sensational developments was born. The 2019 documentary Surviving R. Kelly detailed the abuse stories of numerous women. Kelly is still facing another trial in Chicago for abusing child pornography and obstructing justice.
