Sugar Cane Convention: Slight progress but growers remain mobilized LINFO.re

This Thursday, the island’s planters were mobilized again. A meeting was held in the prefecture with the various players in the sector. Some progress has been made, but planters remain mobilized. There is a new meeting this Friday.

The planters were mobilized again this Thursday. Convoys from the south and east met at Saint-Denis.

In the afternoon, a meeting took place between the various players in the sector. Planters are calling for a price increase for bagasse. At the end of this meeting, some slight progress can be noted, but farmers remain mobilized.

“Albioma is ready to support us so that this sector has a future. Our fight today is that growers make money from biomass. The state is currently playing the role of arbiter and has already made a huge effort of 14 million, but it is not enough. To help us, Albioma wants us to provide him with more staffs. We are ready to do it, but we have to help ourselves,” says Dominique Gigan, President of the FDSEA.

Urgent situation

It is important to find a solution quickly, the start of the campaign in the east has already been delayed.

“The prefect of Réunion has indicated that the convention should be signed before July 14, there is already a delay in the campaign in the east. Our comrades will be concerned if they don’t start the campaign quickly. They are out of money, we must find a solution as soon as possible”, Jean-Bernard Maratchia, elected at the Assembly for Agricultural Affairs.

Les Rhumiers will be present at tomorrow’s meeting and will raise the issue of molasses valorization.
