Just in time for the holiday season: new EU roaming rules in force

Sending a photo of the beach in Italy or calling the parents of the city of Paris has no additional cost. The new EU roaming regulation only comes into effect at the start of the holiday season on Friday.

EU citizens can use their mobile phones to make calls, surf the internet or send text messages at the same cost as at home. Unlike the old regulation, data transmission speed in other EU countries can no longer be limited.

“We were also able to achieve significant improvements in ‘Roam like at Home,'” says Angelika Winzig, head of the ÖVP delegation to the European Parliament and the European Parliament’s chief negotiator for roaming regulation, according to the broadcast. “This takes the lag and patience out of browsing the web, streaming movies, and making video calls.”

prices fall

In addition, the prices that network operators charge each other for roaming continue to drop significantly. The emergency number can also be contacted free of charge. The “fair use” rules remain largely intact. This is to avoid permanent phone calls and internet browsing in other EU countries at no extra cost.

Since 2017, domestic consumers in the EU as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway can use free calls, text messages and mobile data without incurring additional costs. The regime would already have expired. The new roaming regulation applies until 2032. According to a Eurobarometer survey, “Roam like Home” is very popular among EU citizens.
