Kansas City Chiefs add WR and sign Marquez Valdez-Scantling to a three-year deal

Wide wide receiver Marquez Valdez-Scantling is signing a three-year, $30 million contract worth up to $36 million with the Kansas City Chiefs, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

With the move, Valdez-Scantling transitions from current NFL MVP with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers to former Chiefs MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The deal came the day after the Chiefs traded star wide receiver Tyreke Hill to the Miami Dolphins.

For the Packers, this is another wide receiver the team will have to replace after trading star wide receiver Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders last week.

The fast Valdez-Scantling has averaged 17.5 yards per catch since joining the NFL in 2018, the fourth-highest average in the league during that period. He is the only player in the league to have been in the top 10 in yards per catch in each of the past three seasons (among those with at least 25 catches).

Valdez-Scantling, 27, also joined James Lofton as the only player in Packers history to have over 25 receptions and average 15-plus yards per catch in each of the first four NFL seasons.

After playing in every game for his first three seasons, Valdez-Scantling missed six games last season – five with a hamstring injury and one with COVID-19. This limited him to just 26 catches (a career low) for 430 yards (a career low) and three touchdowns.

A fifth-round pick by the Packers in 2018, Valdes-Scantling lost 12 passes in his first three seasons combined, but went through the entire 2021 season without a loss, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

He has 123 receptions for 2,153 yards and 13 touchdowns in 59 career games.
