The driver who caused the multiple accident in Granada assures

The driver of the vehicle that caused the accident in Granada this Sunday in which one person was killed and 35 injured, involving two buses, has told the Guardia Civil that he left his lane because an animal crossed him. According to the investigation, the vehicle hit the brakes, skidded and crashed into the median to stop in the middle of the freeway. The driver of that car, a blue Volkswagen, testified to the Civil Guard that he braked and swerved to avoid an animal crossing his path. The agents have found no animal remains or other evidence to confirm this version, so at this point in the investigation, they explain, they neither rule out nor confirm this option. The driver was traveling alone and had time to get out of the car before a bus crashed into the vehicle. Those seconds advantage probably saved his life. Three of the injured remain in intensive care.

All this happened on Sunday just before six in the morning at km 210 of the A-92 near Moraleda de Zafayona (Granada). At that time, two buses from the same transport company drove to Algeciras (Cádiz) with 101 people on board, most of them Moroccans who wanted to go to their country. The first of the two hit the vehicle on the road and managed to avoid it. However, the second could not pass and eventually collided with the Volkswagen and then crashed into the first bus. The driver of the second bus was killed in the collision.

Investigators ran alcohol and drug tests on the two surviving drivers, and both came back negative. The investigation is focused on knowing if the vehicles were traveling at the right speed and, more importantly, if they were maintaining a safe distance between them, sources close to the investigation said.

The tally of the injured was 35 people, including three minors, who were spread across three hospitals. 21 of them were referred to the San Cecilio Clinic and 11 to the Virgen de las Nieves Neurotraumatology Hospital, both in Granada and 40 kilometers from the scene of the accident. The rest were treated at the High Resolution Hospital in Loja, just over 20 kilometers from the site. According to the Ministry of Health, three of the seriously injured remained in the intensive care unit of Virgen de las Nieves on Monday morning. Two of them are doing very well and have been extubated, so these sources assume they will go to the ward sometime Monday or Tuesday. However, the third shows slower development and remains intubated, although stable. At the other hospital in Granada, San Cecilio, only one minor remains in pediatrics and a 70-year-old woman who underwent surgery on Sunday evening, although this Monday she is already on the ground. The uninjured travelers were treated at a hotel near the scene of the accident and continued their journey to Algeciras late Sunday afternoon.
