JK Rowling has backed Macy Gray as the singer faces charges of ‘transphobia’ after saying ‘changing your body parts doesn’t make you a woman’.
Ms Gray, 54, took part in an uncensored interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored, in which she also said she doesn’t think transgender women should be allowed to compete against biological women in sports.
But Ms Rowling backed the singer today, tweeting a screenshot of Ms Gray’s tweet that said the “truth hurts” after broadcaster India Willoughby accused the singer of “killing what’s left of her career.” “.
Alongside the picture, the Harry Potter author tweeted, “Today feels like a good day to make sure I bought Macy Gray’s entire back catalog.”
It comes after Ms Gray said during Monday’s interview: “Just because you go and change your parts doesn’t make you a woman, sorry.”
She conceded that people would hate me for saying that, but “I know that for a fact, adding, ‘If you want me to call you ‘her,’ I will, because that’s it, whatever you want, but that doesn’t matter. You’re a woman just because I call you a “she” and just because you’ve had surgery.’
Morgan said most public figures are too scared to say “what a woman is.” The singer agreed, saying, “I know! … I would say a person with breasts. How about starting there? And a vagina.’
Harry Potter author JK Rowling supported the singer on Twitter, posting a screenshot of Ms Gray’s “truth hurts” tweet and adding that she bought her “entire back catalogue”.
‘Changing your parts doesn’t make you a woman’: Macy Gray, 54, made her views on trans issues clear in an unbiased interview with Piers Morgan on Monday
Interview: Piers, 57, then said he believed most public figures were too scared to say “what a woman is”.
The duo discussed the issue of transgender women in sport while the presenter said “I support all transgender rights of fairness and equality”.
Morgan then added that he doesn’t support transgender people with “physically superior bodies” who beat up women in their sports.
Macy added, “I totally agree…if you want me to call you ‘her,’ I will, because that’s what you want, but that doesn’t make you a woman just because I.” calling you ‘she’ and only because you had surgery.’
She continued, “A woman goes through a completely unique experience and surgery and finding yourself doesn’t change that. Being a little girl is a whole epic book, you know? You can’t have this just because you want to be a woman.’
When Piers pointed out that Harry Potter author JK Rowling had been criticized for her views on trans women, Macy said, “But it’s the truth.”
Adding, “I don’t think you should be called transphobic just because you don’t agree…there’s a lot of judgment and stone throwing at people just for saying what it is, you know what I mean?”.
However, social media users were quick to brand the singer a Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist (TERF).
One Twitter user said: “My bingo card didn’t say ‘Macy Gray is a terf’. That sucks.’
Trans journalist Imara Jones wrote: “Oh no! [Macy Gray] has become fully transphobic [Piers Morgan] on July 4th no less! Your selective freedom is a “no” from me to some. We have so much to do [to] Help everyone see that patriarchy is a universal problem. That’s sad.’
Meanwhile, journalist Ernest Ownes tweeted, “SAD NEWS: Macy Gray & Bette Midler have come out as TERFs. Unfollow, unsupport and unsubscribe.”
Twitter users branded Macy Gray a TERF after she said, “Just because you go and change your parts doesn’t make you a woman.”
Controversial: During the unbiased interview, the 54-year-old singer also opened up about her recent controversial comments about the changing of the American flag (pictured earlier this year)
Criticized: When Piers pointed out that Harry Potter author JK Rowling had been criticized for her views on trans women, Macy said: “But it’s the truth.”
Gray was also questioned by Morgan about the backlash she received for saying the American flag should be changed, and she said she was “excited to bring it.” [the subject] up again’.
The singer insists the flag should reflect “diversity and culture”.
“My idea was to make the stars the colors of all of us. So there would be one star to represent you, one to represent me, one to represent everyone in the room, right. That way you look up to the flag, you feel welcome, you feel included, you feel like you belong.’
Gray claimed “the flag was conceived” and created to reflect what was happening at the time – namely, war.
“It wasn’t something we celebrate, a flag that represents war,” she said.
She added, “It’s not about white people, it’s just different than when Lincoln was president. Whoever designed this flag designed it for this day. I’m just saying what’s wrong with a new flag and what’s wrong with representing where we are now?’
Grey’s comments come after she received backlash for her previous comments on the flag in June 2021 – claiming it needs to be redesigned to represent all Americans and is currently “ragged, outdated, divisive and wrong”.
Republicans were quick to slam the singer, claiming he symbolized “liberty” and “justice.”
Gray claimed she didn’t expect the backlash and thought people would approve of the idea of a new flag.
Holiday: Piers will have about a month off from his talk TV show later in the summer as the program struggles to attract the same audiences that tuned in when it first launched
The interview with Gray comes after it was reported that Morgan will be taking a month’s hiatus from his show later in the summer as the program struggles to attract the same audiences that tuned in when it first launched.
The former Good Morning Britain star averaged more than 300,000 viewers for his debut episode interviewing former US President Donald Trump on April 25, which aired on Fox Nation in the US.
But since then, viewership has plummeted, with recent episodes garnering around 30,000 viewers.
It has emerged that the presenter will be away from the channel for about four weeks in late summer due to a pre-planned vacation and filming commitments for a true crime documentary series he is doing.
