On the beach in Hurghada, Egypt, there were recently two shark attacks in a very short time – two women (including an Austrian) died. Now there’s a new theory as to why the killer shark attacked.

The freighter “Badr1” sank on June 12 in the port of Sawakin (Sudan), just about 1,000 kilometers south of the popular holiday destination Hurghada. The freighter was clearly overloaded with 15,800 sheep. When the ship sank, only 700 sheep could be pulled out of the water alive.

Although the current in the Red Sea usually runs from north to south, environmental union president Hassan El Tayeb can imagine a connection between shark attacks and sheep carcasses. “Every year, numerous ships pass through the Suez Canal carrying sheep for the Hajj season (the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca),” the president of the environmental union told “Bild”.

The pilgrimage starts on Thursday, and 2.5 million visitors are expected. “Often sick and dead sheep are thrown into the sea so that there are no problems with the vets when they arrive,” explains Hassan El Tayeb. As the sharks are waiting for food, more and more of these animals would follow the freighters.
