Every year, on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour is held, launched 15 years ago by WWF Australia. This year, the initiative takes place on March 26. From 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, people, cities and businesses around the world will turn off their lights to send out a climate protection signal.

This year should also be a sign of peace in Ukraine, in Europe and around the world. Hollabrunn is also taking part in the campaign for climate, environment and peace and will turn off the lights in the town hall at 8:30 pm. “We also want to set an example of peace and environmental protection,” emphasizes Mayor Alfred Babinsky.

In addition to this awareness-raising effort, WWF Austria is calling for the acceleration of climate policy and the resolution of the five climate policy milestones in 2022. WWF’s Earth Hour Day is the 450th day without the Energy Efficiency Act. The climate protection act was also rejected a long time ago. We have to wait until the announced reduction of environmentally harmful subsidies is postponed. Politicians must finally switch the switch when it comes to climate protection, says WWF climate spokesman Karl Schellmann.

The expansion of renewable energy sources in line with nature protection criteria and a comprehensive change in mobility are urgently needed. With each day of downtime, meeting climate targets becomes more and more difficult.
