Cancer patient has had the corona virus in his body for 471 days

Immunocompromised patients, i.e. those who are able to fight viruses and bacteria, are one of the main risk groups for Covid19. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been reports of people spending months with the coronavirus circulating in their bodies after being infected.

Researchers at Yale University in the United States have found what could be the longest patient with the virus: more than 471 days. The unidentified man is in his 60s and is being treated for lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system.

Scientists have discovered that the individual has three different strains in the body and they believe the virus is mutating and the patient could be a vector of transmission. Genome changes are happening twice as fast as usual.

The study was published in preprint form last Saturday (07/02) and has not yet been peerreviewed by the scientific community. The patient continues to test positive for Covid19. The situation differs from the socalled long covid, when the patient has some symptoms, but the virus does not circulate in the body.

Without having a definitive name, the series of symptoms that persist after the coronavirus infection has been cured is known as PostCovid Syndrome, Long Covid, Persistent Covid or Prolonged Covid Freepik

Longterm Covid is defined as cases where the symptoms of the infection last longer than 4 weeks. In addition, some other patients even recover quickly but have longterm problems with Pixabay

One of the most recent and comprehensive articles on the subject comes from a group of universities in the United States, Mexico and Sweden. The researchers selected the most relevant publications on ongoing Covid around the world and identified 55 top symptoms iStock

Prolonged Covid is also common after mild and moderate versions of the infection without requiring the patient to be hospitalized. About 80% of people who contracted the disease still had some symptoms at least two weeks after the virus was cured Freepik

In addition, one of the studies analyzed indicates that postcoronavirus fatigue is more common in women, as is hair loss.

Experts believe the long Covid could be a ‘second wave’ of the damage the virus is wreaking on the body. The initial infection causes some people’s immune systems to overwhelm and attack not only the virus but also the body’s own tissues. Getty Images

Despite a full recovery from the disease, recent studies from the University of Washington at Saint Louis in the United States warn that anyone who has recovered from Covid19 can experience complications in the year following infection. Getty Images

For example, the risk of having a heart attack is 63% higher for those who have already had the infection. The probability of coronary artery disease increases to 72% and for a heart attack to 52%. Getty Images

“This chronic infection leads to accelerated evolution and divergence of SarsCoV2, a mechanism that could potentially contribute to the emergence of genetically distinct variants,” the scientists write in the article.
