Both Profar and CJ Abrams sprinted to catch the ball, unaware of each other’s efforts in a game against the San Francisco Giants.
A split second after Abrams caught the ball, the pair collided at high speed with Profar, who was attempting a dive catch. Footage showed Abram’s knee making significant contact with his teammate’s head.
Profar was obviously uncomfortable lying on the ground but later tried to leave the field, accompanied by members of his team. However, he collapsed upon reaching the infield and was subsequently carried off by paramedics.
“Jurickson Profar was transported to UC San Diego Health for further evaluation. We will provide additional updates as they become available,” the Padres said said in a statement.
Profar left the stadium to applause, smiling and raising his fist to greet the fans.
“No tingling in the arms or anything like that,” manager Bob Melvin said after the game. “I think the thing we’re most worried about right now is a concussion, but they’re checking everything.”
“It’s just a horrible feeling when you put someone on a stretcher like that.
“Just looking at him for who he is – trying to make everyone feel good with a smile on their face – makes you feel a little bit better.”
After the game, Abrams said he didn’t hear Profar coming and wasn’t even aware of his teammate until they made contact.
“I was just trying to catch it,” Abrams said. “I have not heard anything; the crowd was loud. Next we just bumped into each other… Hope he’s okay.”
