Canada specifically targets “29 state-sponsored disinformation and propaganda agents” and “15 entities controlled or owned by the Russian government and involved in disinformation efforts.”
“The Russian propaganda machine must answer for its lies. Canada is committed to taking action against disinformation anywhere, anytime,” said Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly.
Russia Today’s head of international reporting is among those described by Ottawa as having “significant” influence in Russia.
Ms Joly is currently attending the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday.
The latter claimed that Russia had “not yet started serious things” in Ukraine, a statement taken as a provocation by the NATO community.
This brings the number of Russian and Belarusian individuals and organizations sanctioned by Canada since the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24 to 1,150.
