Sunglasses, black leather jacket, a little bit of Fonzie and a little bit of top gun. North Korean leader Kim Jongun appeared in a Hollywoodstyle film celebrating yesterday’s launch of the ICBM ICBM. Rhythmic music and slow motion, the video starts with Kim coming out of a hangar accompanied by two soldiers, a bit of Top Gun, a bit of Gangnam style, the hit of North Korean Kpop. In the background, the huge rocket towers above its launcher.
The images, shown on Twitter from the NK News profile (while the full 11minute version can be found on YouTube), follow one another in a tight montage as the military and Kim look at wristwatches. At X time, Kim takes off her glasses with a meaningful look, always in slow motion. Then you will see the command centers preparing for launch, you will hear the countdown, a finger will appear, press the fateful button, and the rocket will take off towards the sky. The inspiration is clearly an American action film, although the removed sunglasses are reminiscent of John Belushi trying to apologize to his exgirlfriend in the Blues Brothers.
The video, in which Kim looks thinner and fitter than before, was shown several times today on North Korean television. Kim, who studied undercover at a school in Switzerland, has always been fascinated by many aspects of Western pop culture, particularly American, as evidenced by his passion for basketball.
But Kim is also a fan of black leather jackets, which he started sporting in 2019. In recent years he had created a real fashion with imitations that were sold on the stands. So much so that the authorities intervened last November: the leader’s style cannot be imitated with impunity, only the party can decide who has the right to wear the jacket. For those who are not allowed to wear clothing like the Führer’s, it is “an impure trend that calls into question the authority of his dignity.”
BREAKING: North Korea’s state television is showing edited footage of Kim Jong Un leading the test launch of what the country calls the Hwasong17 ICBM.
