It’s just a small gesture – but when millions of people around the world turn off their lights at the end of March for Earth Hour, attention shifts to one of the greatest conflicts of our time: climate protection.

On Saturday, this year’s WWF’s Earth Hour, lights around the world will turn off for 60 minutes at 20:30 local time. But this year we’re not just focusing on protecting the planet. In keeping with the motto “Light for a Peaceful and Living Planet”, the 2022 campaign is also dedicated to the desire for peace in Ukraine, Europe and around the world.

# Light and #Hour for Earth

Private individuals, cities, public institutions or companies, analog or digital – WWF invites everyone to participate and report it on social networks using the hashtags #LichtAus and #Earth Hour. The lights should go out in offices, houses and apartments, but also in famous buildings.

According to WWF, the effects of the climate crisis, especially in the form of summer drought, floods and forest fires, are now more tangible in Germany than ever before.

Solidarity with Ukraine

As a sign of solidarity with the victims of the war in Ukraine, WWF announced that it would focus not only on the word peace, but also on the visual one. In the face of war, the climate crisis and dependence on fossil fuels, the signal of the climate protection campaign to unite people for a peaceful and vibrant planet is more important than ever, the organizers emphasize.

Earth Hour has been around for 15 years

The idea for “Earth Hour” was born 15 years ago in Australia by the WWF environmental foundation. Today it is probably the largest global campaign to protect the climate and the environment in the world, says the foundation. Earth Hour now takes place on all continents in more than 180 countries. More than 7,000 cities around the world take part in it.
