With the country still under attack from Russian forces, Ukraine’s Ministry of Digital Transformation announced today the launch of the MetaHistory Museum of Warthat only contains NFTs.
As you can imagine, the “museum” is not a physical building, but a website. Its collection, created with the support of the ministry, chronicles recent events in the war between Russia and Ukraine, including personal reflections from Ukrainian and international digital artists.
But there’s a catch.
Everything on the site is purchasable – with each image associated with a non-fungible token minted by the industrial fair NFT platform using Ethereum blockchain and Polygon network. However, all images remain hidden until they’re sold – meaning you don’t know what you’re buying until you’ve bought it. As the museum puts it, “You reveal the truth when you buy MetaHistory.”
Each NFT in the “Warline” collection costs 0.15 ETH (around $468), with assets sold listed in chronological order of the dates shown. Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov calls the new platform a “place to preserve the memory of the war” and “celebrate Ukrainian identity and freedom”.
Funds from the NFT sale go directly to the Ministry of Digital Transformation’s official cryptocurrency accounts to support the army and civilian aid.
Over $100 million in crypto donations have poured into the region since the Russian invasion began. According to data from analytics website Merkle Science, the majority went directly to the Ukrainian government. Earlier this month, UkraineDAO raised $6.75 million in ETH with the sale of an NFT depicting the Ukrainian flag.
“NFTs have shown the world the power of community and the importance of the voice of the many and the one,” Fair wrote in a blog post.
