So far, Pacheco is undecided on who he will support in October’s presidential election.
In the state of Minas Gerais (southeast), for which the senator was elected, the Social Democratic Party forged an alliance with the PT that will support former Belo Horizonte mayor Alexandre Kalil’s aspirations to govern the partition.
As part of the agreement, the PT will also support the candidacy of Alexandre Silveira, a Pacheco ally, for re-election to the Senate.
“I see it as a natural, institutional and important meeting to show that the institutions in this country are talking, having a dialogue. While they don’t always agree, there is an atmosphere of dialogue and great mutual respect among all,” the Senate helmsman reiterated the dialogue with Lula.
He stated that he will fulfill the appointment and even more so with a former head of state who “wants to meet with the President of the Senate. It is my duty to receive,” he remarked.
On another page, Pacheco lamented the murder of Marcelo Arruda, city guard and treasurer of the PT.
The crime happened this Sunday in the city of Foz de Iguazu in the southern state of Paraná, motivated by political intolerance.
According to the plainclothes police, the man who shot Arruda is federal detective Jorge José da Rocha Guaranho, a supporter of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro.
“This path of violence, of intolerance, is the path of barbarism. We are living a medieval moment in modern times of social networks. It’s very bad because it reinforces that medieval aspect that nobody in the country wants,” Pacheco said.
He alluded to the responsibility of pre-candidates in the run-up to the election, most notably Lula and Bolsonaro, who are leading the voting intention polls for the next election with an apparent difference.
“You must reject any act of violence, whether committed by one side or the other. This is what society and institutions expect from a legitimate electoral process,” he noted.
From this Monday, Lula, the PT’s pre-candidate, will visit this capital to fulfill a series of political commitments and exchange views with stakeholders and companies and economic sectors.
