California gas prices reach record highs

According to AAA, California’s average gas price reached a record high of $ 5.90 per gallon on Friday.

Just last month, the state’s average gas price was $ 4.79. A year ago, the average price of gas in the state was $ 3.88, down $ 2.02 altogether.

Nationally, the average price of gas ($ 4.24) has risen by about 70 cents since Russia invaded Ukraine. However, gas prices have already risen by about $ 1 since President Joe Biden took office and wage war on US energy independence.

Throughout his first year in office, Biden has made it difficult for oil companies to raise funds to drill private land. Biden also stopped new drilling on public land and ended the Keystone Pipeline project, which was supposed to transport large amounts of oil to American refineries.

On Wednesday, Governor Gavin Newsom (D) proposed to counter Biden’s high gas prices by making a direct payment of $ 400 per vehicle. Payment is limited to 2 vehicles per family.

In California, gasoline prices are high due to high fuel taxes and strict red tapes. As a result, according to Newsom’s office, the average California driver is subject to an excise tax of approximately $ 300 each year.

Newsom’s plans to give money to drivers will probably require a $ 400 debit card for registered vehicles, including electric vehicles, to not reduce the incentive to buy expensive electric vehicles.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the plan will cost $ 11 billion taxpayers. Newsom’s plan still has to be approved by the Legislature.
