The Open: Tiger Woods sheds tears as he walks down the 18th hole at St Andrews

Emotional Tiger Woods sheds tears as he walks down the 18th hole at St Andrews to massive cheers en route to missing the cut at the 150th Open Championship – and he admits it felt like my last British Been Open at St Andrews.

  • Tiger Woods finished a total of nine over par after his second round at The Open
  • The 46-year-old missed the cut and will not play at St Andrews at the weekend
  • The three-time Open winner appeared in tears as he neared 18th
  • Woods afterwards admitted that this could be his last appearance on a legendary pitch

Tiger Woods couldn’t hide his feelings after missing the cut at the Open this week and said he “don’t know” if he could play another British Open at St Andrews.

The 15-time Major winner has struggled in the past two days, finishing over par nine times.

He received a great round of applause as he walked across the famous Swilcan Bridge on his way to the 18th green, but most importantly did not stop as is customary on a player’s last visit to the course.

Woods told Sky Sports: “I’ve made my share of mistakes. I fought again today, took a few bad shots. Again, I just never really got anything going. I had to shoot a low one today and I certainly didn’t do that.’

“It was very emotional for me. I’ve been coming here since 1995. I think the next Open here will be in 2030 and I don’t know if I’ll be physically able to play by then.”

He continued: “I don’t know if I will be physically able to play another British Open here at St Andrews. I certainly feel like I’ll be able to play more opens, but I don’t know if I’ll be there when it comes back here. So the warmth and the ovation at 18 got to me.

“I’ve been lucky and fortunate to have one here twice. It felt very emotional. Just because I don’t know what my health will be like and I feel like I can play future British Open but maybe not here.

Woods missed the US Open earlier this year to ensure he is fit for a course he has previously described as his favorite.

He was solid if unspectacular for most of the day and put up a run of nine straight pars, but he still appeared to be suffering from the effects of his car accident last year when he hit a double bogey and a putt on the 16th missed birdie on last hole.
