FSU football transfers show up big in first spring scrimmage

Here’s a breakdown of the transfers discussed in detail after the scrimmage:

RB Trey Benson

“Trey Benson had some great runs,” Norvell said. “Proved his speed and athleticism. He was really impressive.”

Norvell explained that coaches originally planned to be cautious with Benson this spring to ensure the serious knee injury he sustained in late 2020 didn’t have a lasting impact. But that doesn’t seem to be a problem anymore.

“We started slow the first week trying to pick our (spots),” Norvell said. “This last week, coming back from spring break, you see the confidence in his mileage. Today he had a couple of games on the goal line where you can feel his power. He arrived in the open field today and you can feel his speed. It’s a good combo for a 215-pound back.

Offensive coordinator Alex Atkins also offered rave reviews for the Mississippi native.

“Trey is a competitor,” Atkins said. “If we tried to confine him, he would probably run through the coaching box to try to get on the field. He wants it. … Of course we will monitor him, but he is ready to go. He runs hard. He picks up the pieces. We don’t babysit with him at all. He’s focused and I just love his approach of going into a fairly established space and going head-to-head with him.

WR Mycah Pittman

“Mycah got another touchdown,” Norvell said after the scrimmage. “He’s doing pretty well with what we’re asking of him.”

FSU brought in four wide receiver transfers this offseason, and Pittman has begun to establish himself as a primary weapon in the Seminoles’ passing game. He had several touchdowns in practice on Thursday and another on Saturday.

While Wright is sidelined after his accident, Arizona State ties 6-7 Johnny Wilson was very impressive at times during training, and Two insteps has shown a lot of potential with his size (6-4, 200) and speed. Neither of those two were singled out on Saturday, but Atkins said they are all helping to upgrade the wide receiver unit as a whole – by making their talents available and also pushing the returning players forward.

“Getting those reps and increasing the competition in the room is just raising the standard in the room,” Atkins said. “I was happy with all these guys.”
