Last month, the 28-year-old pop superstar revealed in an Instagram video how the condition had ravaged his facial expressions – days after he canceled concerts due to what he called a non-COVID-related illness.
He told his fans in a social media clip: “Hey Justin here, I wanted to update you guys on what’s going on.
“Obviously, as you can probably see from my face. I have this syndrome called Ramsay Hunt Syndrome and it’s from this virus which is attacking the nerves in my ear and my facial nerves and has paralyzed my face.
Scary: In a social media video, Justin showed the effects of his diagnosis as he showed his eye didn’t blink, he couldn’t smile and his nostril didn’t move on the right side
Issues: Justin’s right eye couldn’t blink and the right side of his face didn’t move as he said, “Hey Justin here, I wanted to update you all on what’s going on.”
“I can’t believe I’m saying that. I’ve done everything I can to get better, but my illness is getting worse.
“My heart is breaking that I have to reschedule these next few shows (Doctor’s orders.) To all my people, I love you so much and I will rest and get better.”
Pointing to the left side of his face, showing he couldn’t blink or smile, he added: “So there’s complete paralysis on that side of my face. So for those who are frustrated with my cancellations of the next shows, I’m just obviously not physically able to do them. This is pretty serious as you can see.
Health issues: Justin later posted a sad update on his Instagram story, writing: ‘It was getting harder and harder to eat which was extremely frustrating please pray for me [tearing up emoji]’
The pop star wrote: “I can’t believe I’m saying this. I’ve done everything I can to get better, but my illness is getting worse. My heart is breaking that I have to postpone these next shows (doctor orders). To all my people, I love you so much and I will rest and get better.
“I wish that wasn’t the case but obviously my body is telling me to slow down and I hope you guys understand that.
“I will use this time to rest and relax and get back to 100 percent so I can do what I was born to do.”
An insider recently told PEOPLE that Justin has the support of his wife Hailey and he can’t wait to get back to work.
The source said, “Hailey was so supportive of Justin…” while another added, “They are a great team and will get through this together. Justin can’t wait to recover and get back to work.”
WHAT IS RAMSAY HUNT SYNDROME? THE RARE COMPLICATION OF SHINGLES THAT LEADS TO FACIAL PARALYSIS
Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a complication of shingles caused by the same virus as chickenpox (VZV) and can lead to facial paralysis.
The virus reactivates after years of dormancy, causing inflammation and irritation of the facial nerves.
VZV is harmless unless reactivated, and when it does, new symptoms appear.
The virus can be reactivated when the immune system is weakened and less able to fight off infection. Stress is often a trigger.

Figures suggest that five out of every 100,000 US adults will develop RHS. It poses a similar threat in the UK, according to the NHS.
Children are rarely affected by RHS, as the complication most commonly affects adults in their 60s.
Treatment usually includes antiviral drugs. Doctors recommend seeking help within three days of the onset of symptoms.
What are the symptoms?
- facial muscles relax
- Difficulty closing the eye
- Changed taste
- loss of facial expression
- Difficulty eating, drinking and speaking
