One woman has discovered an easy way to get rid of car scuffs using two basic household items – but many have pointed out that it’s not a permanent solution.

Sydney Hess, from the US, tested the trick of rubbing a combination of vinegar and coconut oil over scratches on her car’s clear coat to see if it would work in a now-viral video posted on TikTok.

The Wisconsin hotel worker was skeptical at first, but after applying the concoction with a cloth, she saw the scuff marks magically wiped away.

“I saw this thing on here that says if you mix white vinegar with coconut oil you can remove scratches from your car and well my best friend hit me she wasn’t paying attention but I got a lot of scratches to make it up to try. ‘ she said in the clip.

As Sydney wiped the mixture over the scratches, she admitted she “didn’t think it would really do anything,” but was surprised when the shallow scratches disappeared into the clear coat.

“Oh wait, it actually works,” she said.

How to fix a flat car scratch

To repair a flat scratch or slight swirl, you’ll need two clean microfiber cloths and a scratch-removing product, which you can find at car dealerships and some supermarkets.

Scratch removal products will clean and buff light stains, blending them seamlessly with the rest of the top coat.

To polish out light scratches, simply:

1. Wash and dry your car thoroughly

2. Apply a small amount of scratch remover to the microfiber cloth

3. Spread the product over the mark plus a 60 cm radius around the mark

4. Rub with moderate pressure and overlapping circular motions for about 60 seconds

5. Allow the product to dry to a veil

6. Remove dried product with a fresh, super soft microfiber cloth

7. Repeat until the mark is polished away.

Make sure you do this in the shade when the slab is cool and has been washed before polishing as dirt will scratch more.

Sydney then put the hack to the ultimate test, cleaning the area with rubbing alcohol to see if the scuffs and scratches would reappear, and was shocked to see it didn’t.

Her video has garnered more than 10.2 million views and thousands of comments from amazed viewers, while others pointed out that rain or sunlight would make the tracks visible again.

“It’s like putting lotion on dry skin,” one person joked, while another said, “If it can survive direct sunlight, I’d call it a win.”

“Auto painter here. This will not remove the scratches. It just fills them with oil. Those that aren’t deep look like they’re gone. Until the rain,” emphasized a third.

“It’s just because it hits a cold surface and solidifies, wait until it gets hot it’ll melt,” replied a fourth.

“When it dries, it will still be there. The clear coat needs to be buffed and buffed to bring out small, shallow scratches,” suggested another.

Others shared their quick fix for scratches on a car’s clear coat, including baking soda on a damp rag and whitening toothpaste.

“If you got someone else’s color on your nail polish remover, the nail polish remover works exactly the same for color and scratches,” explained one person.
