At least eight people were killed in an artillery bombardment in northern Iraq. About 20 other civilians were injured in the attack on a tourist region in the Kurdish region of Dohuk today, local officials told the dpa news agency.
Authorities in the autonomous region of Kurdistan blamed neighboring Turkey for the bombing. The Turkish military, which regularly bombs targets in the mountainous border region, has yet to comment.
According to Kurdish sources, the bombing hit a large group of Iraqi travelers who were in the region at the time. At the same time, members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were said to be at the popular resort, reported Kurdish TV station Rudaw, which triggered the bombing from Turkey. Ankara regularly carries out military offensives in the region against the PKK, which is also considered a terrorist organization in the US and Europe.
