Havana, July 20 (Prensa Latina).- With more than 605 million players around the world and a great ability to help humanity survive in times of crisis, Chess celebrates its International Day today and is confident of gaining more followers.

Embraced by a remarkable resilience, adaptability, and summoning power, the science game benefits all its followers when it comes to reducing anxiety and improving mental health.

The discipline, one of the oldest board games, has an intellectual and cultural character, combining elements of sport, scientific thinking and art.

In addition, anyone can play it, as it overcomes barriers of language, age, gender, physical ability, or social status.

Chess, like all other sports, has the power to change perceptions, prejudice and behavior, to inspire people to break down racial and political barriers, to combat discrimination and to defuse conflict.

In particular, they contribute to the promotion of education, sustainable development, peace, cooperation, solidarity, social inclusion and health at local, regional and international level.

For all these reasons, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) proposed to celebrate the International Day of Scientific Games every July 20 to commemorate the founding of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924 .

According to UNESCO, chess is a global game that promotes fairness, inclusion and mutual respect and in this regard can help create an environment of tolerance and understanding between peoples and nations.

It can also contribute to the goals set out in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: strengthening education, promoting gender equality, empowering girls and women, and inclusion, tolerance and respect.

To mark its international day, players, clubs and organizations from around the world organize and participate in events commemorating the existence of chess.

With this in mind, FIDE is currently organizing an online event entitled “Chess for a Better Recovery”, sponsored by the United Nations and attended by government officials, civil society, academic figures and prominent shareholders.
