Just two months after his critically acclaimed NBC series This Is Us ended after six seasons, Justin Hartley has found a new job.

The 45-year-old actor’s new adaptation of Jeffrey Deaver’s book The Never Game has been commissioned to pilot on CBS, according to Deadline.

The project had previously received a pilot production commitment from 20th Television in September 2021.

Hartley will portray “lonely survivor Colter Shaw” who travels across the country as a “reward seeker.”

He uses his “expert tracking skills to help private individuals and law enforcement solve all sorts of mysteries while struggling with his own dysfunctional family.”

The project was sold last fall, although it was shelved due to Hartley’s commitment to the final season of This Is Us.

There have also been some significant behind-the-scenes changes between last fall and now, including a change of writers.

Michael Cooney, who was tasked with writing the pilot script when the project was sold, was quietly replaced by Ben Winters.

Winters reportedly delivered the final script last week, which was very well received by network executives and led to the pickup of the pilot.

Hartley will also be reuniting with director Ken Olin, who is directing the pilot of The Never Game and has directed 32 episodes of This Is Us.

Hartley, Olin and Winters will serve as executive producers on the project, while Julianna LaRosa and Roxy Olin will serve as co-executive producers.

“I couldn’t be happier that The Never Game is coming to CBS and that Colter Shaw is coming to life on screen soon,” Hartley said in a statement last fall.

“When I read the book, I was immediately drawn to the character and the story; Developing this project with Ken was a labor of love. Colter is going to get some serious butt kicking and I can’t wait for the audience to meet him,” he concluded.

Hartley has already had quite a busy year, starring in the films A Lot of Nothing and Senior Year.

He also stars in The Noel Diary, which is currently in post-production, alongside James Remar, Bonnie Bedelia and Essence Atkins.
