Is it possible that Putin will be overthrown? The facts say: not in the short term

US President Biden said Putin could not remain in power. Then the sentence was reduced, but the subject remains everything. Is it possible that the Kremlin boss will be sacked, that there will be an internal coup that will push him aside?

I believe that this is not possible, at least in the short term, and some facts support this. Putin is still very strong in the consensus he has in the country. Even independent polls say support for his policies and aggression against Ukraine is around 6070%.

He has been in power for 22 years, all the men of the fundamental apparatus are his men, he has chosen them and they have absolute loyalty to him.

Of course, there has been some flight and some dissociation among the oligarchs, but they are not the real power in Moscow. Only a hard defeat and, ultimately, the seriousness of the dead and the economic impact of the sanctions can decide whether he leaves or is expelled. However, this could happen in the medium to long term. In the short term, that doesn’t seem possible. And then the issue always remains the same, namely what international pressure can persuade Putin to end this war, lay down his arms and finally sit down at the negotiating table.
