The 88-year-old woman was a passenger in the vehicle, which was carrying seven people, when it swerved northbound on Route 323 around 4 p.m. for unknown reasons.

“According to initial information, a 54-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle before swerving and landing in a ditch. There were seven people in the vehicle. The pliers were requested to extirpate them,” said Information Officer Nicolas Scholtus, spokesman for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).

“An 88-year-old woman is in critical condition and her life is in danger. A 52-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman reportedly suffered serious injuries but there is no fear for their lives,” the SQ spokesman said.

They were taken to hospital along with the four other people, aged 50 to 54, who escaped with minor injuries.

No hypothesis was immediately favored to explain the tragedy, but the vehicle involved in this swerve was “regular” to accommodate all of these passengers.

“An investigator and a collision investigator were dispatched to the scene to investigate the causes and circumstances surrounding this event,” Mr Scholtus said.

Route 323 was closed at Chemin Saint-Louis to allow police to do their job. It was reopened to traffic around 6 p.m.

The SQ investigation is ongoing.
