Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray wants a contract extension, but the team has chosen to move on to other fronts before turning to Murray.
The team announced that head coach Cliff Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keem have agreed to extend the team’s term. Both men already have contracts until the 2027 season.
Kingsbury was hired in 2019 and he went 24-24-1 in his first three seasons. The 2021 season ended in first place in the Arizona playoffs since 2015, but they lost to Rams on the road in the wild card round. The Cardinals missed a chance to host a playoff game, scoring 1-4 in the final weeks of the season, including a loss to Seattle in Week 18 that gave Rams the NFC West title.
Keim has been GM since 2013 and has been with the Cardinals since 1999.
“The leadership of both Steve and Cliff has been key factors in the team’s turnaround over the past three seasons,” Cardinals owner Michael Bidwell said in a statement. “We all look forward to continuing this progress and recognize that these two people will be a big part of achieving our long-term goals as an organization.”
It is unclear what impact extensions may have on Murray’s negotiations for a new deal, but adhering to the current trust of the brain does not signal a desire to shake things up in Arizona. Kingsbury agent Eric Burkhardt is also a quarterback, which could be a promising sign of how talks between the two countries will develop.
