Kevin Stefanski on Baker Mayfield: We hope it closes at some point

Now that the Browns have officially unveiled Deshaun Watson as their next quarterback, it’s only a matter of time before the team officially leaves Baker Mayfield.

But up to this point, there doesn’t seem to be much appeal in a possible deal for the 2018 No. 1 overall pick.

At Monday’s annual league meeting, Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t have much to say about Mayfield’s status.

“I think we’ll see,” said Stefanski. “I think everyone understands the situation. We hope that it will be closed at some point.”

Stefanski added that this is a unique situation and the Browns will have to see how it plays out.

Most teams that have a need for quarterbacks have already found a solution. The Seahawks and Panthers are possible candidates. But Seattle acquired Drew Lock as part of the deal that sent Russell Wilson to Denver. And the Panthers already have a top-three quarterback from the 2018 draft guaranteed to make $18.8 million in Sam Darnold.

The Browns would reportedly like to move away from Mayfield sooner or later. But the market can dictate that Cleveland must hold the quarterback until there’s a clear open.
