Hand in hand with Gabriel García Márquez’s unmistakable yellow butterflies, “Encanto” conquered audiences and the Academy with its magical realism, which awarded it the Oscar for best animated film this Sunday.
The Disney production is a love letter to Colombia, which brings its cultural and natural wealth to the screen to tell the story of the Madrigals, a super-powered family living in a magical place surrounded by lush mountains.
“I am very proud to be part of a film that showcases beautiful and diverse characters and reflects people from all over the world,” said producer Yvett Merino upon receiving the statuette.
To the rhythm of Vallenato, with the aroma of coffee and the taste of arepas, the madrigals use their gifts to help the community they live in, but the magic begins to disappear, challenging family resilience and unity.

The powerful ballad marks the emotional climax and leads to the film’s most iconic scene: the moment when Grandma Alma clutches the enchanted light to keep going after her husband is killed by people invading their lands and forcing them to flee .
The drama of the displaced people of Colombia’s internal conflict was thus also reflected in the animation, which was nominated along with “Flee”, “Luca”, “The Mitchell Family vs. the Machines” and “Raya and the Last Dragon”. .
