Shock moment at Oscars 2022: Will Smith rushed to the stage and slapped Chris Rock after he mocked Smith’s wife. It’s not the first time the two have faced each other.
At first, no one knew whether what had just happened on the Oscars stage was part of the process or not: Will Smith walked onto the Oscars stage almost deliberately slowly and slapped comedian Chris Rock in the face. Hollywood stars like Nicole Kidman in the audience reacted in shock to the incident. At the latest, when Smith was back in his seat, visibly emotional, shouting insults at Rock, it was clear: Oscar 2022 will have its scandal. But what was behind the attack?
In fact, Chris Rock should give the Oscar for best documentary. However, the comedian also used his appearance to make a nasty joke to Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith’s wife. “GI Jane 2 – Can’t wait to see this,” he said, referring to the movie GI Jane, for which Demi Moore shaved her head. Pinkett-Smith suffers from hair loss due to an autoimmune disease and therefore wears her hair very short.
The fact that Smith, who initially appeared to be laughing at the joke, was so teased by her likely due to the latent animosity between him and Chris Rock. In 2016, Rock also made fun of the Smith couple at the Oscars. At the time, Jada Pinkett-Smith said that she would boycott the Oscars due to the Academy’s lack of diversity after Will Smith did not receive a nomination for the film “Concussion”. “Jada is mad, she says she won’t come. But when Jada boycotts the Ocsars, it’s like boycotting Rihanna’s underwear: I wasn’t invited there,” Rock joked at the time. Rock and Smith also clash on social media from time to time.

That Smith responded with violence, however, seemed to surprise Rock as well. “Man, that was a GI Jane joke,” he said, as Smith cursed loudly and yelled, “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth!” In the US, the scene was censored with a beep. The Academy has since confirmed that the attack was not planned. The photos show actors Bradley Cooper, Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry talking to Smith during the commercial break, with Smith’s publicist apparently taking the actor to his chest afterwards.
When Smith later took the stage again – this time to receive the Academy Award for Best Actor – he apologized to the Academy and the other nominees. But not with Chris Rock. Neither of them has commented on the incident so far.
