Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes signed a 10-year contract two years ago, and since then other quarterbacks who have accomplished less than Mahomes have signed deals that pay more money per year, with more guarantees and shorter terms that allow them to do so , free to beat agency again earlier. But Mahomes says he’s not worried.

After Kyler Murray signed a lucrative deal to become the youngest quarterback, Mahomes said Friday his own contract puts him under a lifetime contract and he’s not worried about being the highest-paid quarterback in football.

“When I signed my deal, I knew I would be pretty much set for life regardless of what happened in the market,” Mahomes said. “But you just keep playing. Money is one thing, but when you get those Super Bowl rings at the end of your career, I think you’ll look back on them. I think I’ve made enough money with football and of course with it that at the end of the day it doesn’t matter.”

Mahomes also said he expects more young quarterbacks like Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow to sign new deals that dwarf his own in terms of average annual compensation.

“The next guy is the highest paid guy,” Mahomes said.

That’s a good description of why Mahomes left big bucks on the table when he agreed to a 10-year deal with the Chiefs, rather than signing a shorter deal that would allow him to become a free agent again during his prime to become. The next man to sign a new contract is the highest paid man, and Mahomes won’t be signing a new contract any time soon. The Chiefs got a bargain when they got Mahomes to sign a 10-year deal.
