An Indian minister who drank a glass of dirty water from a “sacred” river to prove to locals it was safe has been hospitalized after falling ill.

Bhagwant Mann, Chief Minister of Punjab, was flown to New Delhi after dumping the polluted water from the Kali leg.

The video, which shows Mann scooping up a glass of water and downing the dirty liquid, has since gone viral.

A few days after drinking the water, Mann began to complain of abdominal pain.

He was taken to Apollo Indraprastha Hospital in Sarita Vihar and admitted overnight.

Medics said Mann developed an infection and was treated by a multidisciplinary team.

According to the New Indian Express, once medics ran a series of tests on the minister before he was discharged from the hospital.
