Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel urged his compatriots to have “patience” in the face of current economic problems. There is no “instant” solution to current problems, Diaz-Canel told a special session of parliament in Havana yesterday. There have recently been demonstrations in several cities due to repeated power outages.
The situation is being used by some fellow citizens to “attack the revolution”, said Diaz-Canel. Others engaged in “vandalism,” throwing rocks and breaking windows. Those who act in this way correspond to the expectations of defenders of “counter-revolution and blockade”, said the president. Diaz-Canel was referring to the economic blockade imposed by the US.
Dozens of residents of Los Palacios, in western Cuba, took part in protests against the power outages in mid-July. Similar protests took place this week in Jagüey Grande, in the west, and Sagua la Grande, in the center, according to independent media reports.
Cuba has struggled with power supply problems since May. Several plants have failed or are being maintained. Cuba is currently experiencing the worst economic crisis in 30 years. Food, medicine and fuel are lacking.
