Caracas, March 28th (EFE).- The Secretary General of the Bolivarian Alliance of Peoples of Our America (ALBA), Sacha Llorenti, congratulated Nicaragua on Monday for being elected Vice-President of the 37th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Ecuador from March 28th to Friday April 1st.
“We congratulate Nicaragua on its election as Vice President of the 37th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean. This is a recognition of the achievements of the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity in relation to food sovereignty,” Llorenti wrote on her Twitter account.
Nicaragua is one of the allied countries of the government of Nicolás Maduro, who last November congratulated Daniel Ortega on his “legitimate” and “impeccable” re-election as President of this country and his wife Rosario Murillo on being re-elected Vice-President of the nation, after the general elections of November 7. November.
Last Friday, ALBA’s secretary-general said the bloc would make “very important announcements” in the “coming weeks.”
He also explained that ALBA — which is “essential” and “more solid and effective than ever” — is in a “revitalization process” and “is relaunching various projects.”
He also highlighted the “great difficulties” it is going through, both because of the US “criminal blockade” against Cuba and Venezuela and because of the coronavirus pandemic.
ALBA currently has ten members (Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Nicaragua, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Venezuela) and two special guests (Haiti and Suriname).
At the last ALBA summit, held in Havana in December 2021, it was agreed to work together to ensure food and medical security within the bloc and to coordinate production of food and medicines between the countries.
At the UN Food and Agriculture Fund (FAO) conference, 33 countries will analyze various interesting topics with a particular focus on food security.
The conference includes two days of preparation before the start of Wednesday’s high-level meeting, which is expected to be attended by Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso and FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu. EFE
