Ukraine: Independent Russia “Novaya Gazeta” ends presentations

The newspaper Novaya Gazeta, which criticizes the Kremlin, will cease to be published due to pressure from Russian authorities until the end of the war in Ukraine. The online and paper editions will no longer appear “until the end of the ‘special operation on the territory of Ukraine,'” the editors said on Monday on Twitter, which is blocked in Russia. The newspaper, run by Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov, is one of the last remaining independent media outlets in Russia.

“Foreign Agent”

Novaya Gazeta explained that the editorial staff had already received the second notice from media regulator Roskomnadzor. Two of those warning letters threatened to withdraw the license, he said. Thus, the newspaper is said to have failed to mention the addition of “foreign agent” in an article. Anyone who receives money from abroad as a non-governmental organization or as a medium, for example, has to describe himself as a “foreign agent” on instructions from the authorities. Many sufferers criticize the term as stigmatizing.
