Michael Douglas was seen in the newly sold home of the late Father Kirk in Montecito

Michael Douglas was seen at his late father Kirk Douglas’ vacation home in Montecito on Friday, in what was perhaps his touching last visit to the property, where he spent many happy family vacations.

The Montecito summer house sold for $ 6.8 million on January 28, almost two years after the Hollywood star’s death two years ago at the age of 103.

Built in 1957, the four-bedroom, three-bathroom, 3,487-square-foot house is on one full acre and was used for weekend getaways by Douglas and his wife, Anne.

The property was hard to miss in the neighborhood, and locals affectionately called it the Gugular Roof House because of the bizarre statue perched high on the tiles.

Douglas’ eldest son, Michael, 77, was spotted carrying out orders just blocks from the house last Friday before returning to it with a home dinner from local pet Pierre La Fond & Co.

He carved a lone figure as he walked around the market with a small basket with his head bowed, buying two flavors of kombucha tea, as well as delicacies packed in several small boxes.

He then drove to the San Isidro pharmacy and bought something before getting into the older Toyota Prius, which was owned by his father, and returned behind the gates of the newly sold home.

Kirk, whose career spans six decades, died in February 2020 at the age of 103. His widow, his second wife, Anne Budens, died the following April at the age of 102.

In the past, the energetic couple was often seen taking orders at Wells Fargo Bank in the Upper Village, shopping at the Montecito Village grocery store and dining at local favorites such as Lucky’s and Via Vai.

Over time, a caregiver drove them in the same black Prius.

“Michael looked exhausted and maybe a little sad,” a viewer told DailyMail.com. “You would have seen him in the old days.” [first wife] Diandra, and later Catherine, having a double date with Kirk and Anne, laughing in the restaurant’s courtyard. Now the house is sold and this is the end of an era.

It is possible that Michael was there to pack some other items before the new owners moved in.

The home was sold as a “pocket advertisement”, which means that it was not advertised or made public during the sale.

As such, not much is known about the interior of the home, nor how much the Douglas family paid for it, or even when they bought it.

The sale of the home would take place at about the same time as Kirk and Ann’s home in Beverly Hills sold for just over $ 9 million, $ 1.52 million above asking price in January.

Real estate agent Rochelle Maze of Nourmand & Associates said The Wall Street Journal at a time when 31 “unheard” offers had been made for the home of the late Spartak actor, which went on sale in December for $ 7.495 million.

“We usually get four to five offers at that price,” Maize told the paper. “Usually this type of business is reserved for a $ 1 million property.”

The stunning 1920s property, located in one of the country’s most expensive and exclusive neighborhoods, features four bedrooms, six bathrooms, a 4,648-square-foot one-story main house and a two-story guest house.

Douglas and his wife, Anne, bought the property for $ 400,000 in 1976 and spent their last days in the modest mansion. The couple also lives in Montecito part-time.

Michael has a longstanding relationship with Montecito and the Santa Barbara County area.

He graduated from the University of Santa Barbara in California at Isla Vista in 1968. Michael called the area home to his entire first marriage to Diandra Lucer Douglas (1977-2000), raising their son Cameron, 43, in seven bedrooms, home to ten Mediterranean-style bathrooms, which later sold for $ 29 million.

In 1996, the Douglas family generously donated the last $ 600,000 – $ 3.6 million – needed to save a 70-acre coastal property from developers.

Now called the Douglas Family Reserve, a space park has been opened where people can walk, watch birds and enjoy nature.

“What a wonderful legacy to leave behind,” said a local.

Michael has been married to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones, 52, since 2000, and the couple has two children, a 21-year-old son, Dylan, and an 18-year-old daughter, Karis.
