The Giants came into the offseason in terrible salary-cap form and the trade in cornerback James Bradberry was mentioned as a way to free up a significant amount of cap space, but the team chose to use other avenues to gain space towards creating free agency.
Those moves have brought them below the cap, but they still need to clear more space if they want to sign all of their draft picks, and that has left the prospect of a Bradberry trade on the radar. A deal with him would fetch $12.1 million, and the prospect came up when Schoen met the media from league meetings on Monday.
Schoen said Bradberry “can still play at a high level and he’s in our squad.” When asked if he expected that to continue, he replied in the affirmative, but was far from offering any guarantees about Bradberry’s future .
“I’m not going to say that,” Schoen said of the New York Post’s Paul Schwartz. “I won’t say that about anyone. People have called about certain players and people have value. Again, he’s 28, he’s two years away from a Pro Bowl season and he’s still a high-profile corner. I mean, if it’s the right offer and it makes sense for the New York Giants, I have to consider it.”
If the Giants don’t act or cut Bradberry, a contract extension would be the other way to get the cap relief they need. That last option doesn’t appear to be a preferred plan for the team, but it seems nothing is off the table in regards to the cornerback.
