In a detailed article by vulturea visual effects artist (who preferred not to be named) decided to expose the working conditions at Marvel Studios.
“It’s well known among the visual effects houses and darkly hilarious how difficult it is to work on Marvel Studios productions. When I was working on a single film, it was overtime every day for almost six months. I worked seven days a week, an average of 64 hours a week. Colleagues sat next to me, and they began to cry. I’ve seen people on the phone with anxiety attacks.”
explained.
“The studio has a lot of power over the VFX houses simply because so many successful films come out back to back. If you disturb them in any way, there is a high probability that you will not receive these projects in the future. So these houses bend over backwards to make Marvel happy.”
The artist also points out that a largescale project typically has a team of ten artists working in postproduction, compared to just two at Marvel.
Another factor that bothers visual artists is the many changes during the process.
“They’re already overloaded, but then Marvel demands regular changes beyond what any other customer is doing. And some of these changes are really important. Maybe a month or two before a movie comes out. They let you change the entire third act, always under very tight deadlines.”
explained.
“A visual effects house was unable to complete their work on a particular film because of these deadlines and has since been effectively blacklisted and will never work for them again.”
Finally, the artist says that this situation can be repeated with other studios, but apparently none in Hollywood “A bullying force as strong as Marvel.”
