Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine plans to increase electricity exports to the EU, which is facing potential energy shortages due to Russia’s supply blockade. “We are preparing to increase our electricity exports to consumers in the European Union,” Zelenskyy said in his speech last night. “Our exports not only allow us to earn foreign exchange, but also help our partners withstand Russian energy pressures.”

Russia has significantly reduced gas supplies to Europe through the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, part of which is used for electricity generation. Zelenskyy said that despite the war, Ukraine connected its network to the European system. “Thanks to our national power generation, we will gradually make Ukraine one of the guarantors of European energy security,” he said.
Before the invasion of Russia, 50% of Ukraine’s energy needs were met by nuclear power. The country also relied on imports from Russia and Belarus. Russian troops recently captured Ukraine’s largest nuclear power plant in Enerhodar, a hydroelectric power station on the Dnipro River and at least two coal-fired power plants.
