The full extent of the devastation in the city of Irpin can be seen in new video captured by a Ukrainian NGO and made available to CNN.

It comes after Ukrainian forces drove Russian troops out of the city in the north-western suburbs of Kyiv over the past 36 hours.

Some context: CNN has geolocated and verified the authenticity of video captured by the Ukrainian Witness Project chronicling the war in Ukraine. This is one of the first videos from the eastern part of Irpin in weeks, as intense fighting there has made safe access impossible.

On Monday, the mayor of Irpin said Ukrainian troops had retaken the area from Russian forces.

A Wasteland: Video, shot on Tuesday, shows the wooded suburb resembling an apocalyptic wasteland.

Wind whipping through the remaining trees and the clinking of tin on metal is all that can be heard in the video, aside from the muffled thud of a military strike in the distance.

Running Fire: Russia claims it will reduce military activity near Kyiv, but CNN has yet to see any sign of this as military strikes continued near the Ukrainian capital on Tuesday night.

The video shows that the gunshots, the bombs and the war have left Irpin – for now – but also most of life in the town.

bodies on streets: Aside from rubble and destroyed buildings, the only thing left on the streets are the bodies of civilians.

A person in a leather jacket, who appeared to be pulling a small cart when killed, lies face down on the ground. Another victim is seen on the back of a bullet-riddled car.

At least five bodies can be seen in the video. How and when they died is unclear.

The video shows them lying where they were beaten to death on the street, in wind-filled silence, between charred buildings and splintered trees.
