Spiral of violence against society leaders continues in Colombia

As the Institute for Development and Peace explained, the 29-year-old was kidnapped last Friday by members of the Clan del Golfo.

The armed men took him to the Atrato River, where he was killed and his body thrown into the water found floating in front of Beté, the municipal seat.

The Office of the Ombudsman issued an early warning on this delimitation of Chocó in 2021, indicating that due to the constant presence of armed actors on the territory and the state of detention caused by their military actions, the development of productive activities of the inhabitants is affected.

The crime against Sarcelino Lana has killed 48 social leaders in Colombia so far in 2022, the third in the last two days after two leaders were killed in a military operation in Putumayo department on March 28, and 1,348 since the signing of the peace accord in Colombia Year 2016 to date.

Chocó indigenous authorities expressed their categorical rejection of this new crime, which leaves “three orphaned children and a helpless family”. “The Chocó indigenous movement deeply regrets how silence and pain are taking over the indigenous lands without a vigorous response from the Colombian state,” the group said in a statement.

He demanded that the Attorney General’s office launch an investigation into the facts and that the government implement vigorous and real strategies to protect life on the reservations and indigenous communities in that department.

They demanded that the armed groups respect the right to life in the ancestral communities of the Colombian nation.

Colombia is currently experiencing a spiral of violence that is affecting several departments such as Chocó itself, Arauca, Putumayo and others, in addition to two recent attacks on police facilities in this capital.
