At least five people died in an attack in Bnei Brak, near Tel Aviv, according to rescuers. According to media reports, a motorcyclist opened fire before he was also shot. It was the third attack in Israel in a week.

An alleged Arab gunman killed at least five people in Israel before being shot dead, medics said on Tuesday. “The terrorist has been liquidated,” a spokesperson for Magen David Adom said after the incident near Tel Aviv.

Amateur television footage showed a man dressed in black with an assault rifle on a street in the town of Bnei Brak. Many ultra-Orthodox Jews live there. According to eyewitnesses, he opened fire on balconies, then on people on the street, as well as a car. Israeli media, citing security circles, reported that the attacker was a Palestinian from the West Bank. No one initially claimed responsibility for the attack.

Before the start of security consultations with Defense Minister Benny Gantz and the military and police, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said: “Israel is faced with a murderous wave of Arab terror.”

In a video message, members of the Al-Aqsa Brigades in Jenin praised the attack. One of the three hooded men announced in Hebrew a “war on the entire State of Israel”. The Al-Aqsa Brigades are the military wing of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement. However, it is a loose network with no clear hierarchy, local groups often act on their own.

That means eleven Israelis died in attacks in one week. Two police officers and two assassins were killed in an attack in the coastal town of Hadera on Sunday. The perpetrators were Israeli Arabs from the north of the country. The jihadist organization Islamic State (IS) has recognized this.

A week ago, four people were killed in another terrorist attack in Beersheva, southern Israel, two men and two women. The assassin, a Bedouin from the Negev desert, was shot dead by bystanders. It was one of the deadliest attacks with Israeli casualties in recent years. The author also had IS connections: in 2016 he was sentenced to four years in prison because he wanted to travel to Syria and fight for the jihadists there.

Israeli opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on Twitter on Tuesday that it was “a sad and difficult night”. Israel is “at the height of a dangerous wave of terrorism the likes of which we haven’t seen in years.” He called for decisive action “to bring back calm and security to the citizens of Israel”.

After the attack in Bnei Brak, Palestinians spontaneously celebrated in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as in Lebanon.

The Foreign Office in Berlin was shocked and condemned the act. “All those with responsibility and influence must clearly condemn these acts of violence so that the violence does not escalate further. This applies even more to preventing a spiral of violence during the upcoming holidays for Jews, Muslims and Christians,” the ministry said.
