More than two dozen New Jersey preschoolers have been rushed to the hospital after drinking from milk cartons that were actually filled with disinfectant.

25 Pre-K students, ages three and four from Camden’s Early Childhood Development Center, were taken to a local hospital as a precaution on Wednesday after consuming “non-toxic expendable disinfectants,” the Camden City School District said in a Opinion.

School officials said staff became concerned after noticing a chemical odor emanating from or near the milk, CBS Philadelphia reported.

The school district said the milk cartons were filled with the disinfectant, sealed and shipped with the milk. The disinfectant is usually run through the vendor’s machines to clean them before the milk is sealed, the district said.

“Unfortunately, many boxes were filled with the disinfectant, sealed and then shipped with the milk. We pulled all the milk today and NO milk will be served until the investigation is complete,” the district said.

It was unclear which company had supplied the milk to the school, how many boxes might have been affected or if the disinfectant had also been sent to other schools.
