Two Cuban women living in Hialeah were arrested by Miami County Police this weekend when they tried to cash several bogus checks, one for $10,000, at a facility at 2750 West 68th Street.
Yanet Chapotín Fernández, 38, and Daylan Concepción Rodríguez, 24, had stolen a significant number of checks and then forged them to cash at various Miami stores.
According to the report released by América Tevé, both scammers are behind bars in the county jail and face charges of second-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit fraud.
This type of crime has been quite common in Miami in recent months, many of them committed by citizens of Cuban origin. Last March, police arrested Denis Monsibaez Díaz for bank fraud in Virginia and was sentenced to 37 months in prison.
Fake checks: many Cuban scams
Another Cuban woman living in the United States, identified as Mayver Cruz-López, attempted to cash a check using the identity of a deceased person last month.
Mayver, 48, was even out on bail and was caught in Hialeah intending to purchase the $4,625 on behalf of the late Barbara Rodriguez.
According to his statements to police, the fake check had been given to him by a man nicknamed “Petate,” whom he met at a casino in the same city, who would only give him $100 in return if he completed the operation .
Also late last month, another Cuban woman, identified as Grettel Martinez, 44, was jailed for cashing approximately $45,000 in counterfeit checks. The woman traded four of them on behalf of a company for which she had more than 10 charges against her. A Broward County judge set bail at $32,500.
