The legends of tomorrow goodbye again to a member of the team: Nick Zano, who plays Nate Haywood (also known as Steel), will not return as a regular series for potential season 8, TVLine has learned. (The show hasn’t resumed yet.)
Zano joined the CW drama in the premiere of season 2, appearing in 94 episodes. In the finale of season 7 on Wednesday, his character escapes through a World War I battlefield to save the love of his friend Gwyn Allen. While Nate was successful, mustard gas eroded his steel exterior, leaving him without his superpower. He then said goodbye to the Legends before returning to the totem to live his life with his girlfriend Zari 1.0. (To see the other surprises of the finale, click here.)
“It simply came to our notice then. It was kind of a natural time to say goodbye to this character, “co-showrunner Keto Shimizu told TVLine. “We feel so happy that we had this wonderful period of six years of developing this character and working with such a talented person.”
As for the decision to deprive Nate of his superpower in his last episode, “it felt like a natural way to end his participation in the show,” Shimizu said. “He started the show by winning the superpower. It was right to say goodbye to him, as it is to say goodbye to the team. “
“As we explore this finale, it still doesn’t feel complete. He feels he has this ability and he has this desire to be there and save people, “Shimizu continues.” And it really made sense to us that he would probably never feel that his job was done while he was still he had this ability because he would always feel like, “Am I wasting this power when I’m here, not going out there and actively using it?” We wanted him to literally go out there and give 100 percent. And in this case, he does this and more, because by going there in the mustard gas and saving Alun, he becomes a mere mortal again. But now he knows he did ea lot of things in his power to perform this act of heroism. “
Coming from the other side, Nate also “broke the curse of his ancestors, who had to die in the field, on the moon, by a demon, all the ways Haywood people died in the past,” Shimizu said. Now he can “finally say, ‘Wow, I’m still alive. Guess what? I’m going to live, “and for him that means being with Zari and living a really good life.
And as with others Legends comes out over the years, “of course the door is always open for people to come back and visit,” Shimizu added. “But yes, this is a real goodbye. He’s going to live with Zari in a totem and finally write his book. “
