President Kais Saied finally dissolves parliament and threatens lawmakers with “conspiracy” trials. But resistance to it is growing.
The power struggle in Tunisia between President Kais Saied and Parliament has reached a new level. On Thursday night, the president finally dissolved Parliament by decree. The North African country, once hailed as the only positive democratic example of the Arab Spring, is one step closer to returning to autocracy.
The latest round of exchanges between the president and parliament began on Wednesday. Kais Said declared a state of emergency in July last year and temporarily suspended parliament. Despite this, more than half of MPs met on Wednesday for the first time since Parliament was suspended for an online session. They voted to end the state of emergency.
