Summer of Expensive Travel: Little Chance of Last Minute Bargains

When it comes to holidays, Austrians need to catch up after the two-year pandemic, says the travel industry. Of course, also to keep the travel mood boiling or, for some, to get it started in the first place. The question arises as to what exactly tourists want to update.

Apparently, they ate very little during the pandemic. According to a survey (1,500 participants) commissioned by Ruefa travel agencies, 70% look forward to culinary delights on vacation. In second place is the “dolce far niente”, that is, doing nothing (59%), only then discovering new destinations (44%). “The batteries are empty”, comments Helga Freund, managing director of the 75 Ruefa travel agencies. In view of rising energy and living costs, some people’s purses may also be low. On average, the holiday budget of €1,550 per person is €70 less than the previous year. “A quarter of respondents intend to spend a maximum of 500 euros”, explains Freund.
